Beef and Broccoli

ImageI know, I know — it says “broccoli” so why are there those orange thingies there?  Well, I happened to have some carrots in the fridge and thought I would add them!  If I had mushrooms I would have added them too 🙂

Anyway, this recipe is something that I keep in my file and you might want to as well, to help vary your family menu.


500 grams beef, thinly sliced

10 teaspoons soy sauce, divided into 6 teaspoons and 4 teaspoons

1 1/3 cups water

broccoli florets (and stems if you want), plus other vegies you want to add 🙂

1 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon fresh ginger, chopped or sliced

2 tablespoons cornstarch dissolved in 6 tablespoons water

First of, marinate your beef in your 6 teaspoons of soy sauce for at least 15 minutes.

Heat a pan and stir fry the beef for 1 minute.  Remove the beef and set aside.  Add water to the pan and bring to a boil.  Add your broccoli, sugar and ginger and cook over HIGH heat for 3 minutes.

Return beef to the pan.  Stir in the cornstarch mixture (make sure you have dissolved the cornstarch!) to thicken.  Add the remaining 4 teaspoons soy sauce.

FINISHED! Serve with steamed rice for a simple dinner. 

This recipe would probably serve 4 people.
